Man, I wish I knew how to trap. I grew up with an "eww its a spider" type of family that didn't really do anything outdoors. I'm really the black sheep, thats for sure. I've been dying to learn how to hunt & trap, but can't find anyone to teach me Crying or Very sad I went out pheasant hunting once through my college and got 5 birds that day, but I'd like to learn how to hunt with a rifle so I can get a deer. And trapping would be awesome.... sigh

Well i just moved to get away from all of that. We lived on 300 acres and it was getting grown up all around us and the only reason we waited as long as we did to move was because the land was inherited from 3 or 4 generations and we hated to sell but it was just getting to grown up. We were half scared to go deer hunting with the rifle.

Thats such a shame...is there anywhere wild in the US that isn't being bombarded with rich city folk's urban sprawl?? My husband and I are planning on moving to Alaska and getting away from the cities once we've saved up enough and have secure jobs.

Okay...

For someone new to Taxidermy (meself Very Happy ) that wanted to try to set a few traps on thier hunting land to try to catch a few Taxidermy specimens...
1.What would you suggest as a starter set of traps? Both for ease of use, little damage and lower cost?

2.What would be your best advise for a total novice trapper?

3.What would the min. supply list be and start up cost? The must haves just to try trapping this year?

I see a lot of fox on my land, coons, and some coyotes. Im not interested in trapping for profit.. just mostly for practice animals for me and maybe some other newbies that cant afford to practice on a high priced, high qaulity specimen.

Thanks.. sam

Well what i would do is get on ebay and buy you 12 or 15 1 1/2 coil spring traps. Dosnt realy matter the name brand. Make sure they have been dyed or waxed or both. That keeps the animal from smelling the trap. The next thing you will need to do is get you a video explaining how to trap because there are so many diffrent sets for diffrsnt animals. As far as a supply list i would say. 1. traps 2. stakes for staking the traps down 3. some kinda good bait or lure 4. a small shovel or somthing to dig a whole for bait and to set your trap 5. Pan covers 6. cover scent Thats about all the main things. I have a video that covers fox and coyote i will sell for $20 if you want it. If your ever arond Lincolnton Ga i will show you some stuff on trapping.

Ok, I have a question... What do you do if you set a trap and get a nontarget species in it such as a house cat or dog or anything thats not what you're trapping for? Just curious. Question

well NatureGoddess what you do is you have a choke pole like dog catchers use with the loop on the end and you just put the loop on his head where he cant bite and turn it loose.

Really the best thing to do is if you have dogs around you shouldnt trap there cause thats gone stir up some trouble but if you do you had better make sure you are perfectly legal.

Hi
My name is Kirk and I'm a trapper from Ontario Canada.
Trapping season opens Oct.25 and I'm already biting at the bit.
I trap 5000 acres private land ,2000 acres of crown land(signed only for me to trap) and also I'm a helper on a 50 square mile registered trapline( first year).
Time now is being spent scouting , getting equipment ready and getting the cabin prepared.

COME ON OCT. 25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PostSubject: release pole   Thu Sep 13, 2007 7:31 pm

Get you a release pole----A pole with a cable run through it with a loop in one end. Place the loop over the animals neck and tighten a little. Then release him. Be careful cause some animals when released may decide they dont like you.

Haha..yeah, Have yall ever seen the video clip of some African park rangers letting a leopard go out of the back of their truck? It runs out of its carrier, then decides to jump into the driver's side window of the truck and slashes up one of the rangers real good. Crazy! Shocked
